Music Magazine Final

Here are our final editions for our music magazine

Lee's Evaluation

In what ways does your media product use develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media product?

My magazine uses, develops and challenges forms of media as I have used micros to create a macro that is a real media product.
Such as a barcode. I have used a barcode to show the price of the magazine I decided to add a barcode as real magazines do this as I found out from my research that magazines have barcodes so the price can be found easily. I have also placed the price next to the barcode as a real product would have I have chosen the price to be £3.90 as most rock magazines are priced at £4.50 to £5.00 so I have lowered my price to be competitive towards other magazines. I have used a big bold masthead to stand out like a rock magazine as real rock and grunge magazine titles all stand out because of their colour and size I found this out from researching rock and heavy metal magazines.
This shows I have used qualities of a real magazine and placed them into my product to make it seem more realistic. My magazine also contains page numbers to show which page contains what information. My contents page shows different articles and what pages they are on so if a customer was to look for a certain article it could be easily found via the contents page. Effects like this show that my media product is realistic and looks like a real rock magazine. I have also added the date to my magazine so customers know if they are purchasing the most recent magazine. The most important feature my product contains is photographs as all magazines contain some form of photography my main image is in the centre like a real magazine.

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

My media product represents certain social groups as I have aimed it at certain types of people. I think my product is not aimed at upper class as not many upper class people enjoy listening to rock or read magazines. I believe it is aimed more at a younger more middle class and working class generation.
I feel it is aimed more towards white people as not many black people listen to rock music it is more likely that they would listen to the Hip-hop genre. My magazine isn’t aimed at a particular sex it but it leans more towards males as I believe more males listen to rock and heavy metal style bands however some females do enjoy this style of music so I decided not to aim it at a certain sex.
Different magazines use different techniques to appeal to a certain target audience the main differences are colours, fonts, images and mastheads. These differences can be clearly noticed when comparing magazines between the two sexes.

What kind of media institution might distribute your product and why?

A media institution might work with a magazine company to form a certain media type for the consumer. The media institution I have chosen for my magazine is EMAP as they create such magazines as Kerrang, FHM and Empire. Their target audience is young men and women and teenagers and my magazine is the same type of magazine as Kerrang so this is why I chose this institution.

Who would be the audience for your media product?

The target audience for my magazine would be teenagers from about the age of 14-23 years old. As I found from my research that many people who are leaving college or who are in university who are listening to this style of music and I set the magazine at a fair price as university students could buy it without it costing a lot.

How did you attract/address your audience?

I attracted my audience by using certain colours that match the same genre as my magazine. I created my own brand by adding a peace sign to my masthead. I used bold colours to make my masthead noticeable and stand out so it can be easily read.
I addressed my audience by using informal language so it could be read easily. I also use a grungy style font which suits the genre of the magazine.

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

I used technologies new to me such as using a digital camera and manipulating the photographs I had taken. To manipulate the photos I used serif photoplus and I also used a green screen to chroma –key the images to change the background behind them for this I used paint. Net.

I used the digital camera to take different pictures from different angles to make them seem more professional. I also changed the lighting effects to make the room seem dark or light.
I showed that I can use desktop publishing packages as I created the magazine on serif Draw-plus.

I manipulated photos by adding different effects to them.

This first image is the original one I had taken on the camera without any effects added to it. The second image shows I had added an effect called paper cut-outs to make the image more like a cartoon then I added grey-scale so it stood out from the background of the magazine this makes the image look like a grunge style photograph. In the third image I used chroma –key to delete the background so the image would blend into my background.

I used the green screen to manipulate this image.

Looking back at your preliminary task what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

Looking back at my preliminary task I learnt that my photography skills having improved as when creating my school magazine my photographs were blurred and wasn’t very clear, but now I when taking photographs for my music magazine they are a lot clear and easier to see..
Also I didn’t add page numbers on my school magazine or on the puffs so people reading the magazine wouldn’t know which articles are on what page.
The way I set out my magazine is different to the school magazine because the school magazine was hard to understand and was unclear to read whereas the music magazine is more clear and easier to understand.
I also created this evaluation on a powerpoint presentation in class.

Ben's Evaluation

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

· My media product uses and challenges different forms of media because I have used micros which creates the macro, the overall media product.

· The micros I have used are a date, barcode, masthead, puffs and page numbers to create a real media product. They way I have used a barcode is to show how much my magazine costs and to make it look professional. Also I have used page numbers so the consumer can find out which article he wants to read and easy to locate. I have also used a masthead which suits the style of magazine of I have chosen. The masthead is big and bold which stands out and makes it aesthetically pleasing. Also the puffs that I have used are clear and have used short sentences so it catches the reader’s eye and maybe want to read the article.

· The photographs I have used look professional and make the magazine looks professional as how I have used them and laid them out on the magazine.

· The double page spread shows the article I have written for the band and the questions of the interview.

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

My magazine represents that different classes may not like they genre of magazine I have chosen such as the upper class listens to more classical and jazz type of music. Also the middle classes and working classes may listen to more rock, hiphop, dance etc which may interest the readers to buy my magazine.

Another way my magazine represents different social groups are gender, my magazine is rock so it would appeal to boys more than girls.

Also race may be an issue because they may not like my type of magazine as they could be more stereotypically as black people listen to more hiphop than rock. This could be a disadvantage as my magazine is more rock and the people who don’t like the type of genre won’t buy the magazine.

What kind of media institution might distribute your product and why?

A media institution works with a company to create a form of media for the consumer. The media institution I have chosen for my magazine is EMAP as they create such magazines as FHM, Kerrang and Empire. As their target audience are young men and teenagers as they listen to their own style of music as the consumers have become independent.

Who would be your target audience for your media product?

Looking back at the research I did to find out which target audience would suit my magazine I created a questionnaire to find out and the result was most people liked rock magazines so I decided to use the information I found out and create a rock genre magazine. The target audience for my magazine is teenagers who are aged between 14-19 because the target audience have become independent and may have chose there own genre of music to listen to.

How did you attract/address your audience?

I attracted my target audience as I have used colours that stand out and match the genre of my magazine I have chosen.

The way I have attracted them is used a bold masthead so it is clear and stands out from the background.

Also I have created my own brand by creating my own masthead and using a peace sign and used them together.

They way I have addressed my target audience is used informal language so it suits them and they may understand it more. Also I have not used a fancy text, but instead have used a more grungy text which suits the magazine.

What have learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

I have used many new technologies such as the digital camera, the green screen, photo manipulation software such as serif photo-plus. I have used the digital camera to take the photographs at different angles to make it look professional. Also I would be able to manipulate them using serif photo-plus.

Also I have used the green screen which is new to me; I used it so I could add a new background using paint.net so it looked like a media product.

This is what chroma-key is I used this image for the double page spread

I used a desktop publishing package called serif draw-plus which I used to create my magazine

Looking back at your preliminary task what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it the full product?

Looking back at the school magazine I created the photography I took has improved as on the school magazine they aren’t very clear and are blurred which makes the magazine unprofessional. Also I forget to add page numbers to the puffs on the school magazine on the contents page so it would be hard for the reader to find out an article he wants to read. Also they way I set out my school magazine is different to the music magazine as the music magazine is more clear and easier to understand for the consumer
I also created this evaluation on powerpoint presentation in class

Me and Ben decided to try different names for our rock magazine. Below are some different names for our magazine

We decided that weliked the name Rogue Rock. Then we expiremented with different colours and effects to see which one stood out the most on a black background.

Then when me and Ben decided on which effect we liked we expiremented with different styles of texts and effects and decided that the topone would be suitable.

Then we when we added the masthead to the background the colours did not look rock styleso we changed the colour of the text and the text style to make it stand out more. Theimage below is the final design of our masthead

Analyse

•Tarran’s front page has used contrasting colours and makes the front cover look professional, Another reason for the colour scheme she has chosen is that it is a unisex magazine so it suits boys and girls.
•The images she has used are high quality as she has blended them and has made the puffs stand out.
•She used different types of text styles for example the masthead she has used word art and made the text 3D. Also she has used a different font on the puff text so that it stands out, but could have used another colour and bigger text size so the audience are able to read it clearer. The placement of the text is excellent as she has placed them inside the stars which makes the writing stand out more clearly than if you put it outside.
•This magazine is appropriate to the audience as she has used school colours which is excellent as you that that it is a school magazine. Also she has created her own brand by using the school logo by her masthead.

Our Magazine

Our front page we have used contrasting colours and makes the front cover look professional the colours are based around our school colours. Also the colours we chose for our magazine are unisex colours so it will suit both genders. The main image has no heading to say what it is about and the smaller images are slightly irrelevant and need to be bigger. The text style we have used makes the magazine appealing also we have used contrasting colours with the text to make it match the other colours used. This magazine is appropriate to the audience as we have used school colours which is excellent so you know that it is a school magazine.

We also did this questionnaire to find out what magazine genre they liked. We also asked to see what they would like to see in the school magazine, so if we know what they would like to see we are able to put that into our magazine.

serif photo editing

Me and Ben was experimenting with a design package called Serif Photo Plus and used the picture below. We used a tool in the effect toolbar called vignette which puts a spotlight behind the picture, then we used a zoom blur to create a blurred effect that it is in the distance

Me and Ben were researching the different types of non verbal adverts which shows use the understanding of non-verbal language

Worth Shooting

•Nixon cameras are a famous camera company that most photographers use.
•Kate moss is a world famous iconic model
•This advert connotes that if you buy a Nixon camera you will take pictures as good as this professional one of Kate moss

Small But Tough

•It shows the car is tough because its saying its strong enough to give the police protection. This connotes that it is a small but strong car and if it can protect a number of police it can protect a family inside the car if it was ever to crash.

Durex Performa

The dynamite at the end of the fuse represents a climax the colour red of the dynamite is sexual so the advert suggests that when the fuse is burnt out the Durex will stop the explosion.

Sweet But Not To Sweet

•This advert connotes that Alpen cereal is sweet but not too sweet as the two teddy bears are portrayed as cute and sweet but they are not that sweet due to the clothing they are wearing which is very sexual.

Tabloid and Broadsheet

Broadsheet

•Formal writing and language
•Political, world affairs and it’s a more factual paper.
•Aimed at the upper class and middle class
•Full of finances and businesses
•Mentions big job days and university students.

Tabloid
•Smaller for accessibility
•Colour and layout
•Full of celebrity gossip
•Sensationalism
•Page 3 for the working
class male
•Sports pages
•Criticized for the paparazzi
•Less formal paper
•It uses play on words and pun’s

Photographs/Camera Shot

Me and Ben went around the school taking different types of photographs experimenting the types of angles. The top left photo is a long shot which is a wide shot or a shot where the subject is in the distance. The top right photograph is a low angle so the silhouette and the low amount of light makes the photo look eerie so this still would look great in a horror magazine. The middles left photo is a medium shot is a still shot of a conversation this shows the head, shoulders and chest in the frame. The middle right photo is a shot of a canted angle the photographers who use it use it to get a close up of a fight for example. The next photo is a birds eye view shot or aerial shot this is use for looking straight down we noticed that you get more of the background in this shot, you can take pictures of a subject and get more detail in too. The photo in the bottom right is an extreme long shot, this type of shot would work well in a garden magazine.
