double page spread

This is my double page spread. It is the interview with my band Transition. On it is their their 2 images and their interview on their new album 'Tranfomation'. The text is in arial and the colours are the same ones as i used to the contents page and front cover.

contents page

This is my contents page. the text and colours are similar to the fornt cover because i didn't want the flow to change to another direction. The images are well placed and you can clearly read the text also the image of a city scape is rightly placed on the bottom and my page numbers are in another colour and bond because i wanted them to be seen immediately.

music magazine

This is my music magazine front cover. my image is of a 3-piece hip hop band. My mast head grabs the audience's attention immediately as it is very clear and bright. the background is very simple and the writting is very clear as it is meant to. I mainly used orange, purple and blue because they are colours that are very bright and can be easily seen. The bar code and the date is well placed same as poofs.

natalie chidziya- media evaluation

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge form and conventions or real media?

· Looking at my magazine I think it is conventional in the way that I used very similar colours and text to other hip hop magazines. The image is very simple and my band is wearing very hip hop clothes to suit the genre of the magazine. They are standing in front of a wall, which is mainly used in any band photography. The puffs are very bright as they have to stand out and appeal to my audience. As for my double page spread it is structured like a typical article in any other magazine. For my contents page, double page spread and the front cover I used the same text so that the theme doesn’t change. I also used spray painting on all of the pages to keep all the pages the same. Where my bar code and the date are placed are very the same to other magazines because they go anywhere suitable.
· However, in some ways my magazine has some unconventional features, such as borders around the images. Many magazines do not use borders around the images or any way. I also used some unconventional poses in my photography so that my genre is represented more.

What kind of media institution might distribute your product and why?

· My magazine is a hip hop one. I think the institution that will distribute is likely to be EMAP as they also distribute magazines like Kerrang, FHM and Empire also

· Social networking sites like Facebook, my space and twitter. they have a greater audience because most young people use them to interact with their friends and it will be a great way to advertise my product
· Digital publishers- have become more popular recently because of the access to internet which was made easily available worldwide. More than 17% of the magazines are now available online and therefore this method will definitely distribute a larger scale of any magazine if it was used more often. This method hasn’t been mostly used but it eventually is being put into because the online service now requires customers to pay online before they could read the magazine on the magazine website.
· Music stores such as HMV- are the most distributors of any music product so I think they will play a big role to distributing my product because it would target my particular audience. Stores like this have the best advantage because they are well known and there what ever they introduce will definitely have an impact on customers, they have the ability to choose what and what does not fit in their store.
· Music festivals and gigs- most people socialise by going to a number of social events which include music festivals, gigs or concerts, most of this occasions have stores where they advertise new things happening in the music industry.

· How does your media product represent particular social groups?

· My media product represents the social group of teenagers and young adults who listen to hip hop music. I think I have achieved this through the images, layout and text that I used. I think I have met all of the aspects of a hip hop music magazine and have represented the particular social group very well.
· My media product also divides social groups through gender and age. For example the main photo on my front cover that I used throughout the product is of the same age as my target audience. If I had used an older person on the front cover I may not have attracted the audience I was targeting for or represented their social group. I have aimed my product at both males and females as I wanted to attract a wider target audience. As I have used 3 young males to make them a band on the front rather than a female band because female bands that specialise in hip hop are not very many so I had to go with males so that I attract both genders in different ways.
· For me to represent this type of social group I had to dig deeper, which is why I looked at existing products and did research on the internet of bands. I noticed that there was a very different view on hip hop and that’s why I tried to represent this in my magazine through what my band was wearing in my images. Also from my research I looked at the interests of my social group and I found out that they are more interested in new things e.g. a new song or news albums which is what my band was talking in my 2 page spread.

Who would be the audience for your media product?

· My targeted audience are teenagers and young our, aged 16-25, I chose this group because they are a kind that listens to music and can walk into a shop and buy any thing that is related to music. I have targeted the magazine to both genders as I wanted to aim to a wider audience. This magazine is very controversial because hip hop is of black origin which is why my images are of black people; however my audience are of any race, on the magazine I used a young black hip hop band because I wanted to reflect back to where it all started- back in the 80’s-90’s with hip hop bands like Run DMC making a difference in hip hop at the time.

· I wanted to be sure about my target audience so I also carried out a research to see what was missing in the music magazine market and I found that they weren't so many magazines that were based on just hip hop which is why I chose the genre (to represent it differently). The fact that I also listen to hip hop music gave me some ideas for my product and allowed me to relate with my targeted audience.

· How do you attract or address your audience?

· Looking at my product I feel I have attracted my audience in so many different ways. For instance the image that I used on the front page, I made it fill the whole page so that it draws my audience’s attention immediately. I used the image of my brother and his friends because they are young same as my targeted audience. In all of the images I took into consideration what my band was wearing as I wanted the audience to relate to the magazine e.g. people with the same style in clothes. In order to reach my targeted audience I used conventional. For example a conventional layout which I felt would attract my audience. The fonts I have used are also conventional and are bold to appeal to my audience. I feel the colour scheme I have used also tackles’ my target audience as I have used contrasting colours and fonts instead of using a typical colour such as pink. Some of the things that I used to attract on my product were spray paints and city scape to draw attention to the customers as soon as they look at the magazine.

What have you learnt from techniques from the process of constructing this product?

· Throughout the project I have come across lots of new software and technology which I haven’t previously used. I have also expanded my knowledge on other programmes I have used before such as serif photo plus. I have learnt about lots of new editing skills using the programmes like serif photo plus and Paint.net using tools such as the magic wand tool and bevel emboss. Learning how to edit images like changing the background has proved very useful in this project and it will also help me in the future. I also came across some of programmes that I haven’t used before such as serif page plus- to make my magazine I had to have the programme running and it was very difficult for I hadn’t used before but as time was passing I found my way around the programme. As well as learning to edit images, using new programmes has given me knowledge on how to construct a magazine. Looking at other magazines that are and aren’t related to this product, I feel that I can make any kind of magazine with the knowledge and experience that I have gained.

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progress from it to the full product?

· Looking back on my progress from my preliminary product, I feel that my preliminary product has helped me in many ways when creating my final product. One key factor that my preliminary product helped me with was planning my time, for instance when taking pictured I knew I didn’t have to spend so much time on them because much time was more needed when editing them. However they were some images that were difficult editing because of the type of background they had. If I had taken into mind about the type of background the images needed maybe I would have created much more unique shots throughout my whole product.
· Although my preliminary product helped with the planning of my time I have also had to learn new things which weren’t covered in the preliminary products. For example this product is different from a school magazine because the school magazine didn’t require anything major as well shot images. In general I think that my whole product improved with the experience and knowledge gained from preliminary task.

content page

•This is my final piece of my contents page. I kept it very simple and the colours are contrasting together to make the background more appealing to readers. the page is very classy and simple

school magazine

•THIS IS THE FINAL PIECE OF MY FRONT COVER. I WENT ON TO TAKE PICTURES OF YEAR 7’S USING THE LIBRARY BACAUSE THEY JUST MOVED INTO THE SCHOOL AND THEY ARE ALREADY LEADING BY EXAMPLE. THE MAIN REASON I TOOK THIS PICTURE WAS BECAUSE I WANTED TO ENCOURAGE THE OLDER YEARS TO ALSO MAKE FULL USE OF THE LIBRARY JUST LIKE THE LITTLE ONES ARE. IT WAS VERY SIMPLE FOR ME TO DECIDE WHICH NAME I GIVE MY MAGAZINE BECAUSE IT SURROUNDED MOSTLY ON THINGS GOING ON WITH THE SCHOOL SO I WENT I AHEAD WITH USING THE FRANK F LIFE FOR EVERYTHING IS IN THE TITLE AND IT ALSO STANDS OUT. THE COLOR OF THE MASTER HEAD AND STRAP LINE ARE VERY DARK AND DIFFERENT BECAUSE THE BACKGROUND IS VERY COLORFUL FOR I LOVE MIXING COLORS TOGETHER SO IT JUST HAD TO BE VERY COLOURFUL AND BRIGHT. THE ACTUAL DESIGN OF THE MAGAZINE WAS BASED ON MY OWN IMAGINTION BECAUSE I LOVE READING MAGAZINES SO IT WAS A GREAT DEAL FOR ME TO DESIGN MY OWN DIFFERENTLY. WHEN IT CAME TO MY PUFFS, THEY WASN’T TOO MUCH SPACE SO I MADE THEM EASY AND SIMPLE. THE PICTURE BELOW IS FOR THE SHOE AID AFRICA-I DEMOTRATED MORE USING A PICTURE RATHER THAN WORDS BECAUSE IT’S MORE EFFECTIVE. EVERYTHING ON THE COVER SPEAKS FOR ITSELF.

Rock magazine

•Q magazine is a magazine based for more rocky music, but can also feature some of the biggest artists around which means it may feature some pop, Q magazine also feature things such as old music that people may still listen to or be big after 20 years later. Q also use the same form of house colours as NME magazine, reds, blacks, reds and yellows, but i associate Q magazine to be for the target audience of the older generation, such as 25. On this front cover all the writing and some of the headlines are on the left hand side of the page, that is because when people read they look from left to right, so naturally it attracts more attention to the reader when you first look at it.

Indie magazine

•The front cover of this magazine has the main feature artists on the front page. the main headline of this magazine is the name of the band in very bold letters and then in smaller text just underneath the band name ‘the automatic’ of just an incite what the interview would be like inside. The picture of the band has taken up a lot of the front cover which means there is less room in the remaining areas to put in any other information about the inside but they have managed to feature the most important pieces of information about the magazine such as new music, what reviews are inside and other gossip to do with the music industry. The layouts they have used are very simple and the mast head stands out but not as much as the strap line.

Dance magazine

•Dance magazines are completely different form other magazines as rock, hip-hop and R’n’B. everything about them is about dance and they don’t feature anything that is not dance as other magazines do. The combination of only using 2 colours (red and orange)makes the magazine very simple and elegant. The colours are very contrasting. The poofs surround the whole image and the text is also very clear and bright. Everything on the cover blends in together.

R’n’B/hip- hop magazine

•Vibe magazine is a hip hop/R&B magazine, when I looked at it, it only features the latest news/gossip going around in the R’n’B/hip-hop industry. Their mast head stands out more but their images also takes over the whole magazine. The magazine on the right features the most famous R’n’B female star Beyonce. They have used 2 colours red and black through out. The poofs and the writing are very clear and also brightened in colour.

other magazines

•Blender is a magazines that don’t just talk about the music industry but also digs dip in the personal lives of those on the front cover.
its many colours are mainly red, yellow and black. their images takes over the whole page and the poofs only use little space and the rest just surround the whole image. the text is very simple and brightened in colour.

analysing

•When I looked at Taran’s magazine front cover, it wasn’t too feminine and it looked very natural. However the writing was too small and weren’t as colourful as the poofs were. The poofs really stood out more comparing to the writing. The images blended in together and the rest of the magazine was very good. I thought it was appropriate for everyone for it looked very bright and everything blended in together.

•Sam’s contents page was very out standing. The colours were the same as the front cover and they were very contrasting.

•Sean's front cover was made more out standing by the circles that filled almost half of the page. The mast head wasn’t very good because he made it fade away and the strap line looked more like a mast head because the text size was very big and also very colourful, which I thought should have applied to the masthead instead.

•When I looked at my own magazine front cover, I thought that it was really colourful and is very ideal for a school magazine. The image was positioned well even though it took almost half of the magazine. The text size and colour made the whole front cover stand out more. I don’t really think that I made a brand but I thought it looked very different from others. When it comes to the audience I thought it was appropriate for all ages and everyone who wants to read it. It really encourages pupils to make the best use of the library and I made the poofs very nice and simple in their own territory. The rest of the magazine is very simple and colourful.

•By looking at the magazines together I thought everybody’s was really good in so many different ways.

using serif photo plus

serif photo plus has so many ways of using it. it is designed for professional and advanced amateur photographers, it shows recent advances in photography through a variety of exhibitions, Photo plus can be used for e.g.remove red eye, Whitening teeth or Removing blemishes. it can also provide you with fake tan. when using the programme u can to edit photos, buy changing background colours or cutting off any person whose in the photo u dont like, can also add filters to the image and also can make the photo look fun.

For my image i took a red heart with white background and put it on to serif to change the colour background and the shape of the heart using the flood fill tool and mesh warp tool. Also the instant effect to shape the heart differently

The image after i edited it.

Quetionnaire

I did a questionnaire which is going to help me make and design my school magazine. I wrote it in order to get people’s opinions on the magazine and why they would want to buy and purchase it. I wrote 20 questions’ asking them what attracts them to that magazine, what price would they pay for it and what they expect to get from the magazine.

tabloid newspaper

•Sensationalism

•Page 3 for the workingclass male

•Sports pages

•Criticized for the paparazzi

•Less formal paper

•It uses play on words

magazine cover

huge and very bright heading, for customers to easily recognise the magazine.

Magazine feature a big picture of a celebrity as the centre image to show the big story in the magazine. They also put certain pictures to attract the buyers to finding out more on them.

Larger text on certain words to draw in attention in people to look and purchase the magazine.

Every magazine has poofs on them which shows and tells buyers some parts of stories that are found inside to wanting them to read. This is because they are new stories that noone knows about. Almost every magazine has a website so that some readers can check out new stories and features coming up.

On every magazine there is also a prize tag, this is because they dont want to confuse customers to how much the magazine is so they just make it easier for them. All magazines have bar codes and what date the magazine was released and able to be purchased. Some also have the magazine number issue.
